Battambang Province |
Battambang is a western provinces (khaet) of Cambodia. Neighboring provinces are (from west clockwise) Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap and Pursat. To the west it borders the Thai province of Chanthaburi. The province features a range of cultures as well as natural resources, and is relatively fertile. Battambang is located some 350 kilometers west of Phnom Penh and occupies an area of 11,702 square kilometers. Seventy five percent of the area is jungles and mountains. The area has a tropical climate.
Etymology
Battambang means means lost staff in Khmer. The myth behind the name involves a farmer finding a magic stick and using it to kill people so he could ascend the throne. He would throw the stick and it would kill the intended target and return to him. When he tried to kill the son of the former king, who had become a monk, the stick did not return to him. He fled and the son was returned to the throne. When Battambang fell under the Siamese sphere of influence is was known as Phra Tabong which mean the staff of "Phra".
Transportation
The only way to reach Battambang is by bus or private taxi. Both the airport and railway line are not in use. Buses make the trip from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap almost hourly. It is a 5-6 hour bus ride from Phnom Penh and a 3-4 hour bus ride from Siem Reap.
